-- the first debate is wednesday night in denver. mitt romney in the mile high city tonight for a predebate rally. surrogate chris christie set expectations mile high claiming wednesday night is yet another restart of the romney campaign. >> governor romney's going to lay out his vision for a better and greater america for greater opportunity for all of our citizens and i think that's when you're going it see this race really start to tighten and then move in governor romney's direction. come thursday morning the narrative of this race is going to change. >> romney has been preparing with senator rob portman who filled in as obama during john mccain's 2008 prep. the president practicing with jor kerry playing the role of romney. kerry is a good fit since the parallels between his '04 and current one is overwhelming. can romney get the post-debate bounce kerry did in '04 and take it one step further and turn it into something kerry couldn't do eight years ago. in '04 president bush had a six-point lead before the debates but kerry's performance boosted him tying the men for the final debate

romney would do on wednesday night. that would tighten it in ohio. it would tighten it in north carolina. probably go ahead in north carolina. it would tie it in iowa, probably tie it up in iowa. that's why you can't buy your way out of this mess the romney campaign is in right now, but you can outdebate them. >> more than anything else what seemed to have happened in august was democrats got enthused by their convention more than republicans did. the latest polling shows the enthusiasm gap coming back towards republicans. a git debate could juice that nationally among republicans. >> the people going out to vote is still pretty close. >> they need to turn the page. >> the polls in these swing states, and if i dismissed every other poll but local polls, fox news polls and what the romney people are saying their polls are showing, mitt romney's in trouble. again, if you just look at the locals polls, the fox news polls and the polls that the romney team has internally, mitt romney's in trouble right now. that can all change on wednesday night. >>> coming up, senator john mccain joins us o

of the debate in november. here's what chris christie had to say as he made the rounds. >> on wednesday night, mott is gonna be standing on the -- mitt romney is gonna be standing on the same side of the stage as president obama. the entire race of this presidency is gonna be changing. >> he's a good debater, mitt romney. >> let's go to jamie dupree via skype what. is being said -- skype. what is being said? >> reporter: well, usually, my guy is gonna be -- he's the champ and has been. mitt romney has had a lot more speniance in the last year or so -- experience in the last year or so. think about all of those debates for the gop nomination. romney always seemed to come ready to those debates with one or two-liner zingers. obvious you will, when there's only -- obviously when there's only two people here it will be only mitt romney and president obama. i would say one thing when it comes to expectations, we always talk up these debates and then they seem to be a borging -- boring muddle. i don't remember any good lines from considerry or mccain -- kerry or -- from kerry and mccain. >> this i
